Basic Philosophy for Theologians
with Rev. Dr. Frank Yates
Saturday, January 20, 2024
9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey Guadalupe Commons
5825 Coors Blvd, SW, Albuquerque, NM, 87121
Theology and philosophy are “kissing cousins” in many ways. They ask some of the same questions: What is Reality?
How do you access or know Reality? And what will you do about it? Philosophy depends mainly on reason and rationality,
while theology depends upon reason but adds faith to the inquiry. In this overview we will see how theology and philosopy
have interacted with each other during two thousand years of Church history.
Three books will guid our discussion: A Philosophical Introduction to theology by Deothis Roberts; Philosophy for
Understanding Theology by Diogenes Allen; and, Athens and Jerusalem: The Role of Philosophy in Theology I by Jack
Bonsor. You are encourage to order one of these books to read before the seminar. But no previous reading or study is
required. Just come and learn!
Dr. Frank Yates graduated from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1975 with an M.Div. He later earned a B.A. in
Philosophy from the University of Texas, Austin, did graduate work in philosophy at Texas A&M and earned a D. Min.
from Austin Seminary in 1984. He currently teaches in the Religious Studies Program (Theology and New Testament) at
UNM and is a faculty member of the St. Norbert College Master of Theological Studies Program in New Mexico.
